If you're among the many enthusiasts of *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered* on PC, you might have noticed the game grapples with more than a few issues. According to the tech gurus at Digital Foundry, Oblivion Remastered is plagued with "dire" performance issues on PC. Video producer Alex Battaglia went as far as to call it "perhaps one of the worst-running games I've ever tested for Digital Foundry."
"Even if you're running the most powerful hardware available, the stuttering is egregious, significantly dragging down the gaming experience to the extent that I'm baffled how this was deemed acceptable for release," Battaglia remarked.
"And it's not just the hitching; this game is astonishingly resource-intensive. Even if you can tolerate the stuttering, you'll likely need to lower the settings just to maintain a decent average frame rate," he added.
Given these issues, it's no shock that the most-downloaded mod for Oblivion Remastered on Nexus Mods is P40L0's 'Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless),' which has amassed an impressive 386,604 downloads in under a week. Here's how P40L0 describes the mod:
"Definitive Unreal 'Engine.ini' changes aimed at eliminating most stutters, boosting performance and stability, reducing input latency, and enhancing visual clarity, all without sacrificing visual quality."
"After extensive testing with UE5, I'm excited to share my optimized 'Engine.ini' tweaks for the game," P40L0 stated.
"My objective was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible (for CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD) to eradicate most stuttering, enhance performance, minimize input latency, and improve image clarity (e.g., by eliminating Film Grain & Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more), all without any visual compromise or causing glitches or crashes."

Feedback from users who have downloaded the mod has been overwhelmingly positive. "Stutter be gone! Simply amazing, thanks!" exclaimed chubbyd07. "This .ini is a miracle. From 15-20 fps outside the prison to 65-70 stable. Running on 3600XT and a 2060 with 20GB of RAM (yes)," added yeeto51. "Uhm, what the hell! I went from 60fps on High Preset around Waynon Priory to 90-110fps on the same location. Wizardry!!" said BabaSmith.
Despite the PC version's challenges, *Oblivion Remastered* continues to enjoy immense popularity, boasting a significant peak concurrent player count on Steam and over 4 million players across all platforms. On Steam, the game holds a 'very positive' user review rating.
However, a recent hotfix released on April 25 has impacted Microsoft Store players' UI settings for graphics, particularly concerning upscaling and anti-aliasing. At the time of writing, Microsoft Store players (those using Game Pass for PC) are unable to adjust these settings due to the issue with the settings UI. Bethesda has acknowledged the problem and is working on a solution.
