Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided a positive update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2, assuring fans that progress is going smoothly, despite past hurdles. This update comes alongside news about their other projects, including the fantasy RPG Avowed.
Obsidian's Confidence in Upcoming Titles
In a recent YouTube interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart highlighted the strong performance of the team working on The Outer Worlds 2. He praised their expertise and experience, emphasizing the significant contribution of team members who worked on the first title.
Urquhart candidly acknowledged the challenges faced by Obsidian, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's acquisition by Microsoft. Juggling multiple projects simultaneously—including Grounded and Pentiment—created significant strain. He admitted a period of reduced development efficiency, even mentioning discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus resources on Avowed. However, Obsidian ultimately chose to persevere with all projects.
"We were juggling acquisition, the pandemic, finishing Outer Worlds, its DLC, pushing Avowed forward, restarting Outer Worlds 2, and managing Grounded and Pentiment all at once," Urquhart recalled, highlighting the complexities of that period.
Despite these challenges, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment. He further confirmed that Avowed is progressing well and that The Outer Worlds 2 is looking "incredible." While specific gameplay details remain undisclosed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other Obsidian projects.
The lack of updates since the 2021 announcement of The Outer Worlds 2 was also addressed. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games, stating, "We'll deliver on all these games. Will they meet the original timelines? No. But we'll get there, and that's been proven." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
