Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod usage following the release of Patch 7. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with an incredible number of mods downloaded in a remarkably short timeframe.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) to announce that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," he stated. This figure was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that the total number of installations had surpassed three million and was still climbing rapidly.
Patch 7 itself introduced significant updates, including new evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and a crucial addition: Larian's integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools facilitate custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked," highlighted by PC Gamer, expands modding capabilities even further. This toolkit, uploaded by modder Siegfre on Nexus, reportedly includes a full level editor and reactivates previously disabled features within Larian's editor. This release follows Larian's previously cautious approach to providing full access to its development tools.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding, a significant undertaking according to Vincke. He acknowledged the complexities involved in ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles, outlining a phased rollout beginning with the PC version, followed by console support after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, Larian's commitment to supporting and expanding the modding community is evident.
