Sony Announces Optional PSN Accounts for Some PC Game Ports
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy, making PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts optional for select PS5 titles released on PC. This decision follows player feedback and aims to improve accessibility for a wider audience.
PSN No Longer Mandatory for Several Titles
Effective after the January 30, 2025 launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, players will no longer be required to link a PSN account to play several PlayStation PC ports. This includes:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered (releasing April 2025)
However, it's important to note that this change doesn't apply to all PC ports. Games like Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and Until Dawn will still require a PSN account.
Incentives for PSN Account Holders
While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players who choose to link their accounts. Benefits include:
- Trophies: Earn and track PlayStation Trophies.
- Friend Management: Connect with friends on the PlayStation Network.
- In-Game Bonuses: Exclusive content for specific titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points and Ellie skin (Jordan’s Jacket).
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony has indicated that further incentives may be added in the future.
Addressing Past Backlash
This policy shift follows criticism from players regarding the mandatory PSN account requirement for some PC releases, most notably Helldivers 2. The previous requirement limited accessibility due to PSN's regional availability and raised privacy concerns. Sony's decision to make PSN accounts optional for these titles reflects a commitment to adapting its PC strategy based on player feedback.
This move represents a significant change in Sony's approach to PC gaming, aiming to broaden accessibility while still offering rewards for those who utilize their PlayStation Network accounts.
