Sega clarifies Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Switch 2 release details

Author : Zachary Nov 19,2025

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch as a physical Nintendo Switch title with the complete base game stored on a 64GB game cartridge.

Switch 2 Game-Key Cards represent a new format where physical cards contain download codes rather than game data itself. These require players to download the full game after inserting the card, a practice that has raised concerns among collectors who value owning physical game copies rather than digital licenses.

This clarification proves especially important for Sonic fans, as previous conflicting reports about CrossWorlds' physical format had created confusion. Sega has now definitively addressed these concerns through an updated FAQ, confirming "the physical edition will include the complete base game on a 64GB cartridge."

The FAQ also revealed crossplay functionality for Switch 2 users, progress transfer between Switch generations, and a confirmed $10 upgrade path for moving to Switch 2 version later.

This stands in contrast to Square Enix's recent announcement regarding Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which sparked fan criticism for lacking both upgrade options and cross-platform save compatibility between Switch versions.

Sega confirmed CrossWorlds will boast an expansive character roster including DLC, featuring classic Sonic characters alongside surprising crossovers like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The game faces direct competition from Switch 2 exclusive Mario Kart World, which maintains a Nintendo-only character policy. With CrossWorlds releasing simultaneously on both Switch platforms this September, the classic Mario vs. Sonic racing rivalry will reignite.

IGN's recent preview session with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds delivered positive impressions: "There's a distinctive energy here - one I've thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to experience more of through its drifting mechanics."
