The much-anticipated film adaptation of the 2012 video game *Sleeping Dogs* faced a setback when it was officially canceled earlier this month. However, fans of the game now have a glimmer of hope, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a movie adaptation on X/Twitter, stating his efforts to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," he announced, sparking renewed interest in the project.
Originally announced in 2017, the film was set to star Donnie Yen, but it vanished from the radar a year later. Just weeks ago, Yen confirmed the project's cancellation, expressing his disappointment. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"
With the film seemingly dead in the water, fans had lost all hope for a continuation of the Hong Kong-set action franchise. That is, until Simu Liu, known for his role in *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, responded to a random social media post, hinting at his involvement. Whether Liu will successfully secure the rights or manage to get the film moving forward remains uncertain.
*Sleeping Dogs*, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was well-received, earning an 8/10 from IGN, but unfortunately, no sequels were produced. With Liu's involvement, fans are now cautiously optimistic about seeing the gripping narrative of *Sleeping Dogs* brought to life on the big screen.
