Squad Busters marks its first anniversary with the launch of Update 2.0 on May 13th - the game's most significant transformation since its 2024 debut. Despite initial struggles to achieve expected popularity levels, Supercell aims to revitalize the experience through this comprehensive overhaul.
More Than Just Minor Adjustments
True to its version number, Squad Busters 2.0 represents a complete reboot rather than incremental changes. The update fundamentally alters core mechanics including battle systems, combat flow, and victory conditions.
The most impactful change introduces Hero units as squad leaders. Players now select these upgraded versions of existing characters, with matches ending immediately if your Hero falls in battle.
Combat mechanics receive a dramatic makeover too. Gone are the days of stopping to attack - the new system integrates movement and fighting seamlessly, creating faster-paced, more intense encounters.
Victory requirements shift from eliminating all opponents to focusing solely on taking down the enemy Hero. Some community members have noted similarities to Brawl Stars' core gameplay loop with this change.
Squad Busters 2.0 Eliminates Legacy Systems
The update removes several established gameplay modes including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Certain cosmetic items and progression elements are also being phased out, with compensation provided through Hero Points and other resources.
These sweeping changes clearly address Squad Busters' failure to achieve the viral success of Supercell's flagship titles like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars.
Coinciding with the game's May 29th anniversary, Supercell hopes to reignite player interest through special piñata-themed login events offering chances to unlock Mortis as a new Hero.
