Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world Star Wars game, is significantly underperforming, falling short of sales projections and even being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, according to reports. This news follows a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price after the August 2024 launch.
While initial reviews were positive, player feedback highlighted issues with the game's combat and stealth mechanics. Subsequent updates aimed to address these concerns, but failed to significantly boost sales. Ubisoft acknowledged the disappointing sales figures in September.
VGC and industry journalist Christopher Dring reported that Star Wars Outlaws is not only underperforming but is also being outsold by Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Star Wars Outlaws' European ranking at 47th best-selling game of 2024 further underscores its poor performance.
Several factors may explain Jedi: Survivor's success over Outlaws. Jedi: Survivor is a sequel to the popular Fallen Order, receiving widespread critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. A subsequent update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One further fueled its popularity.
In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November 2024 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka) aim to revitalize interest, but their impact remains to be seen. The future success of Star Wars Outlaws hinges on the effectiveness of this post-launch content.
