Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at its upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of relative silence. This new installment, developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, promises a significant visual evolution.
The last major Virtua Fighter release, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (a 2021 remaster), aside from a Virtua Fighter 2 physical release, only offered updated versions of older titles. With the Ultimate Showdown version recently confirmed for a Steam release in January 2025, the timing for this new entry couldn't be better.
First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the new footage isn't actual gameplay, but rather a meticulously choreographed in-engine demonstration. The polished, almost cinematic quality hints at the game's intended visual style. This highly-stylized presentation, more reminiscent of a Hong Kong action film than a typical fighting game showcase, suggests a deliberate focus on presentation. The resurgence of Virtua Fighter adds further weight to the argument that the 2020s are a golden age for fighting games.
A Visual Shift for Virtua Fighter
The in-engine graphics offer a glimpse into the game's visual direction. Moving away from its polygon-heavy roots and hyper-stylized character designs, the new Virtua Fighter adopts a more realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, sporting two new outfits, a departure from his classic bandana and spiky hair.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the Yakuza series and co-developer of the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development on this new title, alongside their work on Project Century.
Details remain scarce, with the only certainty being that this is a completely new entry in the series. However, Sega's enthusiasm, highlighted by President and COO Shuji Utsumi's declaration ("Virtua Fighter is finally back!") during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, confirms their commitment to reviving the franchise. As Sega continues to offer these sneak peeks, anticipation for the new Virtua Fighter continues to build.
