EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool & PDF Accident Reports for Collision Investigators
WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION
To enhance your collision investigation, utilize the CrashScan App in conjunction with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter. This powerful tool enables you to scan the vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "blackbox," when supported. You can check the compatibility of your vehicle at this link. CrashScan is designed to help investigators flag, capture, and interpret crucial accident data stored within the vehicle. This data is invaluable for validating motor vehicle insurance claims and serves as a lead indicator for assessing liability or identifying questionable collision claims.
VEHICLE SUPPORT
(Event Data Recorder & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
CrashScan supports over 3000 unique year/make/models internationally. Verify the support for your specific vehicle here: Vehicle Support Check.
CONTEXTUAL ACCIDENT REPORTS
Upon a successful "CrashScan," the generated report will provide comprehensive details on the accident, including:
- Impact severity and orientation (front, rear, or side impact)
- Accident classification: minor, moderate, or severe
- EDR trigger thresholds
- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data, including speed, brake pedal, accelerator pedal use, and steering
- Number of occupants and their seatbelt status
- Estimated damage repair amount (economic cost in $)
- Indication of likely structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (e.g., whiplash, injury duration)
- Contextual comparison of typical g-forces in daily activities
The injury risk algorithms are based on stored acceleration values, scientific articles, and databases such as the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)
In Canada, there is no specific legislation governing EDR data; it is considered diagnostic and "non-private." However, insurers typically obtain consent as a best practice.
In the United States, the federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 was enacted in December 2015, which places restrictions on EDR data retrieval and asserts that the data belongs to the vehicle's owner or lessee. Additionally, seventeen states have passed laws regarding EDRs and privacy: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. These laws generally stipulate that EDR data can only be downloaded with the consent of the vehicle owner or policyholder, with certain exceptions.
