Ex-Diablo devs are working on a new ARPG to innovate the genre

The gaming world is buzzing with excitement as former developers of the iconic games Diablo and Diablo 2, Phil Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer, have launched Moon Beast Productions. This indie studio has secured $4.5 million in funding to develop a new "low-budget action RPG" that they believe could revolutionize the industry. With a team boasting veterans from the first two Diablo games, there's a strong foundation for creating something truly exceptional in the action RPG (ARPG) genre.

Moon Beast Productions aims to break away from traditional design patterns and push the boundaries of the hack'n'slash genre. Their goal is to craft a more open and dynamic ARPG, drawing inspiration from what made the early Diablo games so unique and beloved. This approach promises to bring fresh innovation to a genre that has been dominated by established titles for over two decades.

While details about the new game remain scarce, the involvement of such experienced developers suggests it has the potential to be a standout title in the ARPG market. However, breaking into a market filled with high-quality competitors will be challenging. For instance, the recent expansion of Diablo 4, "Vessel of Hatred," has been a massive success, reinforcing the loyalty of its extensive fan base. Additionally, the launch of Path of Exile 2 has been a significant event, achieving a peak player count of over 538,000 on Steam, ranking it as the 15th highest peak player count in the platform's history.

Competing with juggernauts like Diablo and Path of Exile 2 is no small feat. Yet, with their deep understanding of what makes an ARPG great, the team at Moon Beast Productions is poised to make a significant impact. Their vision to return to the roots of what made early Diablo games special, while introducing new and dynamic elements, could indeed set a new standard in the genre.
