Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Returns in Future Fighting Games

Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that their return is "always a possibility," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.

This remastered collection includes six classic titles, notably Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which introduced three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon. These characters have been largely absent from recent installments, making their potential comeback highly anticipated by fans.

Matsumoto emphasized that the Fighting Collection provides a perfect opportunity to reintroduce these characters to a wider audience. He suggested that significant fan interest could even lead to their inclusion in games outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6. This, he explained, would broaden Capcom's creative pool and provide more content for future development.

The release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, a project in development for several years, involved extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. However, he acknowledged that these projects require time, collaboration, and careful consideration of various factors.

Matsumoto concluded by stating that re-releasing classic titles is a priority for Capcom, aiming to reinvigorate the community and gauge interest in potentially reviving other beloved characters and games.
