Oblivion Remastered Surges on Steam, Set for Further Growth

Author : Oliver May 06,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered made a spectacular debut on Steam, achieving a peak concurrent player count of over 180,000 on its launch day. Released unexpectedly on April 22 by Bethesda, the remastered version swiftly climbed to the top of Steam's global top-selling games list, surpassing giants like Valve's Counter-Strike 2, the viral hit Schedule I, and Blizzard's recently updated Overwatch 2. This impressive performance showcases the game's strong appeal and immediate popularity among gamers.

On its first day, Oblivion Remastered not only dominated sales but also secured its place as the fourth most-played game on Steam, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, and Dota 2. It has emerged as the most-played single-player RPG on the platform, outpacing the resurgent Baldur's Gate 3, and boasts a 'very positive' user review rating, reflecting high satisfaction among players.

While Steam statistics provide a glimpse into the game's success, they only tell part of the story. As a Microsoft-owned title, through Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media, Oblivion Remastered was simultaneously launched on Xbox Game Pass for Ultimate subscribers. This likely boosted its player base significantly, though exact numbers remain undisclosed. Additionally, its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S further extends its reach, suggesting that the true peak concurrent player count on launch day is much higher than reported on Steam alone.

Although Bethesda has yet to release total player or sales figures, the game's strong start suggests it will continue to gain traction, especially as it heads into its first weekend on sale.

Developed by the renowned remake specialists Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered offers a plethora of visual and feature enhancements. It boasts 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but the improvements go beyond mere graphics. From revamped leveling systems and character creation to enhanced combat animations and in-game menus, the game has seen significant upgrades. New dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been added, leading some fans to argue that it's more of a remake than a remaster. However, Bethesda maintains its classification as a remaster, explaining their approach to the project.

Originally launched in 2006 as a sequel to the beloved Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion captivated players on PC and Xbox 360, with a PlayStation 3 version following in 2007. Set in the enchanting province of Cyrodiil, the game follows the player's journey to thwart a fanatical cult's attempt to open portals to the demonic realm of Oblivion.
