Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has announced the cancellation of an unannounced incubation project this week, resulting in layoffs affecting an undisclosed number of team members involved in the project. The news initially surfaced through a LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who shared that the project they had been working on for the past year was canceled, and they were now seeking new opportunities.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project, which was developed by a team previously involved with a canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unspecified, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one team member has confirmed on LinkedIn that their exit from the project was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. The trend started with the elimination of 50 jobs at BioWare and an undisclosed number at Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees company-wide and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which led to approximately two dozen job losses at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional layoffs affecting key personnel.
IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for further comment on these developments.
