It's been six years since Team Cherry revealed Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania classic Hollow Knight. Over this period, fans have seen Silksong appear and then disappear at various gaming events. At one stage, Microsoft seemed to confirm it would launch by June 2023. The Game Awards came and went without any sign of Hollow Knight: Silksong. But could the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring the news everyone is waiting for?
Fans certainly think so—and it all revolves around a photo of a cake. Let me break it down.
Dedicated detectives on the Hollow Knight subreddit spotted that on January 15, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He also tweeted, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

At the time, Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement was rumored for January 16—and that’s exactly what happened. That was when Nintendo officially unveiled the Switch 2, though many questions about the next-gen console still remain. Did Pellen really tip people off about the Switch 2 reveal? And if so, why?
This is when the Hollow Knight community went into a frenzy—or completely off the rails, depending on how you look at it. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake photo, which brought them to a Bon Appétit recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake. The recipe was published on April 2, 2024.

Why does that date matter now? Because Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 will premiere on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. That's right—fans believe Pellen’s tweet and cake image are the beginning of an alternate reality game (ARG) teasing Silksong.
The detective work hasn’t stopped there. Fans are now trying to decode Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. Redditor Representative-True offered one of the most plausible theories so far: “The character limit for handles is 15, which matches 'everydruidwaswr.' ‘wr’ might be the beginning of a word like ‘wrong.’ I haven’t cracked it yet, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a known Silksong NPC.”
The mystery deepens! Pellen also changed his display name to “little bomey.” What’s that about? Followers noticed that Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia—where Team Cherry is located—though the spelling doesn’t match. What could it mean?!
It's worth noting that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced, Team Cherry listed the launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Hollow Knight: Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this all just desperate speculation from fans starved for news?
We’ll have to wait a few months to find out. In the meantime, catch up on all the announcements from Nintendo’s Switch 2 reveal.
