Prepare for an enchanting journey into the heart of the American South with South of Midnight, a captivating action-adventure game from Compulsion Games. Revealed at the Xbox Developer_Direct 2025, this title, inspired by Deep South folklore, promises a unique blend of narrative and gameplay.
A Tale of Weaving and Wonders
The story follows Hazel, a young woman thrust into a fantastical world after a devastating hurricane sweeps away her home and her mother. Her quest to find her mother leads her to uncover her own magical heritage as a Weaver, capable of manipulating the threads that connect all things.
Zaire Lanier, Compulsion Games' writer and narrative designer, details Hazel's journey through diverse Southern landscapes, from flooded plains to Appalachian peaks. Her path crosses with fantastical creatures from Southern myths, including Catfish, a colossal, talking creature who reveals Hazel's destiny.
Hazel's powers allow her to manipulate these threads, both in combat and exploration. She faces Haints, corrupted creatures spreading decay, using her unique Weaving abilities to cleanse them and restore balance. The game launches April 8th, 2025, with early access available April 3rd for the Premium Edition.
Gameplay: A Dance of Threads and Combat
Combat in South of Midnight is a strategic ballet of "Push, Pull, and Weave," as described by game director Jasmin Roy. Hazel wields a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, inspired by traditional textile tools, to engage in dynamic battles against the Haints.
Beyond combat, Weaving is key to exploration and puzzle-solving. Hazel can conjure past forms of objects, such as a spectral carriage or glider, to navigate her environment. Her journey will take her across diverse regions, each ruled by a unique mythical creature steeped in Southern Gothic lore.
One such creature, Two-Toed Tom, a massive albino alligator, was showcased during the Direct. Hazel must collect Echoes, fragments of haunted memories, to heal these corrupted beings after engaging them in epic confrontations.
