GTA Online Won't Go Offline For GTA 6, As Long As There's Demand

Take-Two Interactive has a clear stance on supporting their legacy titles, including GTA Online, as long as there's a demand from players. Dive in to discover what the future holds for GTA Online post-GTA 6 launch.

GTA Online Might Survive After GTA 6’s Launch

With the much-anticipated release of GTA 6 on the horizon, many fans are curious about the fate of GTA Online. While Rockstar Games hasn't made a definitive statement, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, shed some light on the matter during an interview with IGN on February 14, 2025.

Zelnick chose not to discuss specific titles or plans directly but offered a reassuring analogy. "I'm going to speak theoretically because I'm not at liberty to discuss projects without official announcements," Zelnick explained. "However, our general approach is to support our titles as long as there's consumer engagement."

He cited the example of NBA 2K Online, which was launched in China in 2012, followed by a sequel in 2017. Despite the new release, Zelnick noted that they "did not discontinue the original," due to the strong player base for both games. "This demonstrates our commitment to supporting legacy titles when there's an active community," he added.

Given Zelnick's comments, it's plausible that Rockstar and Take-Two might continue to support GTA Online post-GTA 6 launch, provided players keep engaging with it. Moreover, GTA Online has been a significant revenue generator for over a decade, making its continued support a likely scenario given its financial success and enduring popularity.

Rockstar Games May Create a Platform Like Roblox and Fortnite for GTA 6

In addition to maintaining GTA Online, Rockstar is reportedly planning a similar online experience for GTA 6, but with a twist—user-generated content (UGC). According to a report by Digiday on February 17, 2025, GTA 6’s online version could resemble platforms like Roblox and Fortnite.

Digiday's report suggests that "Rockstar Games has been engaging with top creators from Roblox and Fortnite, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, to explore the creation of custom experiences within the new game." This would enable players to alter the game’s assets and environment, and even introduce their own, fostering a unique and dynamic sandbox experience.

This move not only promises to broaden GTA 6’s appeal through content creators and modders but also presents a lucrative opportunity for Rockstar and Take-Two to earn additional revenue through virtual item sales and revenue-sharing programs. Although Rockstar has not yet responded to Digiday's inquiries, the potential for integrating modders and content creators into GTA 6's online ecosystem is generating considerable excitement.

Even as a 14-year-old game, GTA 5 and its online component remain a top-watched title on Twitch. The integration of modders and content creators into GTA 6’s online version could amplify its presence across various platforms, drawing in even more players and viewers.
