The complete character roster now includes seven playable fighters and one exploration specialist. Mysterious newcomers Monoco and Esquie bring fresh dynamics to the 33rd expedition.

Monoco, a battle-hungry Gestral, perceives combat as meditation. This shape-shifting warrior can assimilate fallen enemies' abilities, adding strategic depth to encounters. Unlike others, Gestrals remain immune to the Paintress's influence.

Esquie, the world's oldest living legend, serves primarily as the team's navigator. This enigmatic figure requires special stones to unlock new areas and abilities across the open world.

The remaining cast – Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso – were revealed last October. Despite conflicting motivations, these heroes unite to break the cycle of destruction.

Revolutionizing Turn-Based Combat With Reactive Mechanics

As detailed in Xbox Wire's January 2025 feature, Sandfall Interactive has modernized turn-based combat while preserving strategic depth.

"We aimed beyond visual polish," explains Creative Director Guillaume Broche. "Each character boasts distinct playstyles, skill trees, and mechanics, encouraging countless build possibilities while maintaining unique identities."

The innovative reactive turn-based system blends timed inputs with traditional combat. Players can parry attacks or enhance damage through well-timed inputs, with adjustable difficulty accommodating various skill levels.

Deep customization shines through features like Lune's "Stain" resource management and the Pictos-to-Luminas progression system. After four battles, equipment modifiers evolve into permanent passive abilities, unlocking new tactical approaches.

This fusion of real-time reflexes and strategic planning, combined with extensive character specialization, promises to redefine turn-based RPG combat when Expedition 33 launches next spring.
