EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and a 2.0 Reboot
As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges the game's underperformance despite its massive player base. While boasting over 200 million players, the title's revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this in a recent financial call, stating that while the game's trajectory hasn't aligned with their goals, efforts to improve it are ongoing.
Wilson highlighted three key areas of focus: continued community support (including quality-of-life improvements and anti-cheat measures), the creation of new content, and the development of a significant game update dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0."
This 2.0 update is envisioned as a major revitalization, aiming to attract new players and boost revenue. However, its release is strategically planned for after the launch of the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year. Wilson emphasized that this isn't the end of Apex Legends, and that EA intends to nurture the franchise for years to come with further updates.
The planned overhaul echoes Activision's approach with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. While the success of that reboot is still being evaluated, EA will undoubtedly learn from its competitors' experiences in the battle royale landscape. Despite remaining a top-performing title on Steam, Apex Legends has seen a decline in concurrent players, underscoring the need for significant change. The future of Apex Legends hinges on the success of this ambitious 2.0 update.
