Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a remarkable resurgence in player engagement on Steam since the launch of Patch 8, positioning developer Larian Studios to shift focus toward their upcoming major project.
The game-changing Patch 8 introduced 12 new subclasses alongside a much-requested photo mode, triggering a substantial player influx. Over the weekend, Steam recorded a peak concurrent player count of 169,267—an impressive milestone for a single-player RPG in its second year (PlayStation and Xbox player statistics remain undisclosed by their respective platforms).
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke reflected on Patch 8’s success, noting that Baldur’s Gate 3 maintains strong momentum not only from this update but also through flourishing mod support. "This stability allows us to concentrate fully on developing our next major title," Vincke stated, acknowledging the high expectations following BG3’s groundbreaking success.
Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, concluding an extraordinary chapter for Larian. The 2023 RPG masterpiece sustained strong commercial performance throughout 2024 and into 2025 before the studio announced its departure from Dungeons & Dragons projects to pursue an unannounced new game.
Meanwhile, Hasbro—owner of the D&D franchise—has hinted at continuing the Baldur’s Gate series. Dan Ayoub, Hasbro’s SVP of digital games, revealed to IGN that multiple parties have expressed interest in the IP following Larian’s exit. While plans remain undetailed, Ayoub confirmed forthcoming announcements, though whether these involve Baldur’s Gate 4 or crossover content remains unclear.
"We’re adopting a deliberate approach," Ayoub emphasized regarding future development. "The bar is exceptionally high, so we’ll take the necessary time to explore our options properly."
