The upcoming "Overture" DLC for Lies of P will introduce difficulty options for the first time.
As a "Soulslike" title, Lies of P is known for its punishing difficulty, which could be particularly daunting for newcomers drawn in by its dark narrative and atmosphere. Initially, director Jiwon Choi stated that the team believed Soulslike games should not include difficulty settings, so the game launched without any.
Now, Neowiz has reconsidered this stance, explaining that the decision came after carefully reviewing extensive player feedback.
"Our goal was to make the game accessible to a wider audience," Choi told VGC. "We received significant input from our players and our development team. By adjusting our approach and adding difficulty options, we can cater to different play styles and expand our player base."
Players are now discussing the director's change of heart, with one commenting: "It's easier to stick to a 'no difficulty options' stance until you face constant criticism, negative reviews, and see your game’s discussions dominated by accessibility concerns. Adjusting the difficulty lets more people enjoy what you've created."
"I started gaming at 24. I use easier settings because, even though I love Lies of P, I’m not the most skilled—and that's perfectly fine," shared another player. "I thought it would be helpful to explain why someone might want difficulty options. I didn’t have gaming systems as a kid, so now, as a working adult, I don’t have years of built-up skills."
"Souls purists oppose difficulty settings because they enjoy boasting about their in-game accomplishments. I'm glad Lies of P isn’t catering exclusively to them," added this player.
Not everyone is pleased, however, as seen in Steam discussions and on social media.
"I was interested in playing, but after all the nerfs and the addition of difficulty levels, I lost interest. Developers, please stop catering to less dedicated players," wrote one user on the forums, though the majority of responses in that thread support the developer’s new direction.
Another user remarked: "Neowiz, you had a masterpiece and turned it into a joke. Shame." A thread titled "Difficulty Settings = Not Playing" sits right above another from someone who actually tried the game and wrote: "the difficulty is just ridiculous."

Lies of P offers a dark, unique take on the classic Pinocchio tale, blending challenging action with a dynamic "lie" system where your choices and statements shape the gameplay. The new DLC features fresh locations, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons, plus the Death March mode—a new challenge that lets you revisit all the game’s bosses. On average, experienced players can expect the DLC to take about 15-20 hours to complete, unlocking after reaching a specific chapter. Neowiz has also confirmed a full sequel to Lies of P is in development.
