David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind hits like *Atomic Blonde* (2017), *Deadpool 2* (2018), *Hobbs & Shaw* (2019), and *Bullet Train* (2022), is reportedly in negotiations to helm Netflix's adaptation of Microsoft's action-packed game, *Gears of War*. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch, along with Kelly McCormick, will produce the film in collaboration with The Coalition, the developers of the game. The script is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on *Dune*.
It’s been over two years since Netflix acquired the rights to *Gears of War*, and now it appears the project is finally gaining momentum. Alongside the movie, an adult animation series is also in development, set to expand the franchise's universe further. If these adaptations prove successful, fans can anticipate even more *Gears* content in the future.
A major point of interest is who will portray the iconic protagonist, Marcus Fenix. Dave Bautista, the wrestler-turned-actor, has openly expressed his strong desire to take on the role and has even received endorsement from *Gears* co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.
The timing is perfect for *Gears of War* as the video game adaptation genre continues to soar, with recent successes like *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, *A Minecraft Movie*, and the *Sonic* series breaking box office records. Other notable adaptations include the *Uncharted* movie, *Mortal Kombat*, and multiple *Resident Evil* films, highlighting a thriving market for video game-based content.

In March, Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, commented on the company's continued interest in video game adaptations despite the less-than-stellar reception of the Halo TV series. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft has learned valuable lessons from Halo and other projects like Fallout, which have bolstered their confidence in the space.
"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more,” Spencer stated. He reassured the Xbox community that they can expect more adaptations, as Microsoft continues to refine their approach.
Meanwhile, back in the gaming world, The Coalition is hard at work on the prequel *Gears of War: E-Day*, though a release date has yet to be announced.
