RGG Studio's Ability to Juggle Multiple Large-Scale Projects: A Testament to Sega's Risk-Taking Approach
RGG Studio, the powerhouse behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing multiple ambitious projects, including a brand-new IP. This impressive feat is attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation, as explained by RGG Studio head and director, Masayoshi Yokoyama.
Sega's Embrace of Risk Fuels New IPs and Ideas
With a new Like a Dragon title and a Virtua Fighter remake already slated for 2025, the addition of two entirely new projects is remarkable. Yokoyama credits Sega's culture of risk-taking for this opportunity. The simultaneous unveiling of Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, and a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster) at The Game Awards 2025 and subsequently on Sega's official channel, highlights this ambitious approach. Sega's confidence in RGG Studio underscores a strong relationship built on trust and a shared commitment to exploring uncharted territory.
Yokoyama emphasizes Sega's acceptance of potential failure, contrasting it with a more conservative approach focused solely on guaranteed successes. He suggests this risk-taking is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example. Initially working with the Virtua Fighter IP, Sega sought something different, leading to the innovative idea of transforming Virtua Fighter into an RPG, thus birthing the Shenmue series.
RGG Studio assures fans that the concurrent development of these projects will not compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter franchise. With the support of original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki, and a team committed to excellence, Yokoyama and Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada confirm their dedication to delivering a high-quality, innovative experience.
Yamada adds, "With the new 'VF,' we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find 'cool and interesting!'" He and Yokoyama express their hope that gamers will eagerly anticipate both titles.
