Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its impressive performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. A significant number of players are reporting various technical problems, resulting in a less-than-stellar user review rating.
Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. Many users, even those with high-end hardware like RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest Nvidia drivers, are experiencing frequent crashes. One user reported crashes every five minutes, rendering the game unplayable. Another described the game as "rough," citing issues such as incomplete lighting in cutscenes, extremely low frame rates in those same scenes, significant audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and a host of other performance problems. Several users have requested refunds due to these issues.
The primary problem seems to be frequent crashes related to the game's graphics driver. One common error message indicates potential causes such as outdated drivers, excessive in-game settings, GPU overheating, or a game-specific error.
Beyond crashes, other reported issues include malfunctions with features like DLSS and ray tracing, extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio problems. Some players claim performance stutters worsen over extended play sessions, eventually culminating in a complete game crash, leading to speculation about potential memory leaks.
Nixxes Software, the developer responsible for the PC port, has acknowledged these issues on the Steam forums. They've directed users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requested that players submit logs and crash dumps to aid in faster problem resolution. The developer is also aware of a bug affecting photo-op missions, particularly at frame rates below 20 FPS, suggesting a workaround involving reduced graphics settings or resolution.
