Jar of Sparks, NetEase-Backed Studio, Pauses Development on Debut Game
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its first game project. The studio, established in 2022 under the NetEase umbrella, aimed to create "next-generation narrative-driven action games." However, the team is now actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize their creative vision.
NetEase, a prominent global video game company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch, including the recent Season 1 Battle Pass announcement and upcoming Fantastic Four content, highlights NetEase's commitment to its existing portfolio.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the team's dedication to finding a publisher that aligns with their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the progress made and acknowledged the team's willingness to take creative risks. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, a subsequent post indicated the studio is assisting team members in finding new roles as the initial project concludes.
This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a veteran game developer. In 2022, former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi also formed GPTRACK50 Studios under the publisher.
The future of Jar of Sparks remains uncertain, but the studio's temporary setback comes amidst a period of change for Hook's former franchise. Halo Infinite's post-launch challenges and mixed reception of the Paramount+ series have been well-documented. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the Halo franchise.
