Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from previous leagues. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the unique passive skill tree. Four major endgame events—Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions—await in the Atlas map.

Locating and Starting an Expedition

Expeditions are identified by a light blue spiral icon on Atlas map nodes. Use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot to guarantee an Expedition encounter. Once in a map, locate the marked area and interact with one of four NPCs to begin.

Expedition Mechanics: Explosives and Detonation

The core gameplay involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to spawn Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests.

  • Runic Monsters: Spawn from Explosives near Red Markers. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: Relics with beneficial/detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Excavated Chests: Appear when Explosives are detonated near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, and high-tier gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize their area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal resource management. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. You can strategically leave the area after detonation to regroup before engaging enemies.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map—a significantly larger event with more Explosives. This map features Olroth, a powerful boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth grants double Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event. Points are earned by defeating Olroth. The tree offers various notables, each increasing difficulty and rewards.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but increases radius and range, reduces enemy life N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, faster detonation chains N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, albeit harder, gains. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are key rewards, each used to trade with a specific vendor for gear.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used for other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Logbooks, obtained from chests and monsters, unlock the Pinnacle Map and the chance to fight Olroth for superior rewards and additional passive skill tree points.

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Expedition system in Path of Exile 2. Mastering these mechanics will significantly enhance your endgame experience.
