Dune: Awakening surpassed 1 million sales within just two weeks of launch.
Funcom confirmed today that their survival MMO has achieved both critical and commercial success, earning "very positive" Steam reviews while becoming the studio's fastest-selling title to date with over 1 million players "awakened."
"Since its June 10 release, Dune: Awakening has welcomed 1 million players!" announced the developer. "This milestone makes it Funcom's quickest-selling game ever – Conan Exiles took a full year to reach similar numbers. We're deeply grateful for this incredible reception. Though perhaps 'Awakening' isn't quite the right name, given how active players have been since launch.
"The launch has been a whirlwind, and we're still riding the momentum. We've witnessed extraordinary player creativity – from massive bases to heart-stopping encounters with Shai-Hulud, death-defying vehicle stunts, hard-fought victories, and glorious defeats. Our hats off to you, Sleepers."
The survival RPG rapidly gained traction, peaking at 189,333 concurrent players on Steam last weekend after an initial 142,000-player surge at launch. Our 8/10 review praised it as: "Dune: Awakening masterfully translates Frank Herbert's universe into an outstanding survival MMO. The journey from water-starved newcomer to Arrakis warlord delivers consistent satisfaction, with worldbuilding that will delight any sci-fi enthusiast.
"The game isn't without flaws – combat falls short of its potential, endgame content needs refinement, and technical issues remain. Yet these concerns feel insignificant compared to the game's monumental achievements."
Funcom has begun redesigning Deep Desert PvP, an area criticized for toxic player behavior. Following early adjustments like removing Ornithopter crushing mechanics, creative director Viljar Sommerbakk hinted at future changes including rocket-equipped aircraft with reduced speed and handling.
