CD Projekt Red recently unveiled exciting details about The Witcher 4, promising players a journey into uncharted territories and encounters with terrifying new monsters.
Unveiling Stromford and the Bauk
In a post-Game Awards 2024 interview on Gamertag Radio, game director Sebastian Kalemba and executive producer Gosia Mitręga confirmed the introduction of fresh locations and creatures. The village showcased in the trailer is named Stromford, a place where a chilling ritual involving young girls is practiced to appease a fearsome entity.
This entity, revealed as the monster Bauk, is inspired by Serbian mythology. Kalemba described Bauk as a "tricky bastard," a creature that instills genuine terror in its victims. And Bauk is just the beginning; players can expect a host of other new monsters to challenge them throughout their adventure.
While Kalemba expressed enthusiasm about the new environments and creatures, he remained tight-lipped about specific details, promising players a completely novel experience within the familiar world of The Continent.
A subsequent interview with Skill UP confirmed that The Witcher 4's map will be roughly the same size as The Witcher 3. Given Stromford's location in the far north, Ciri's journey will undoubtedly lead her to regions and challenges beyond Geralt's explorations.
Revolutionizing NPCs
The Gamertag Radio interview also highlighted CD Projekt Red's commitment to enhancing the game's Non-Player Characters (NPCs). Addressing criticisms of The Witcher 3's repeated use of NPC models, Kalemba emphasized their focus on creating unique lives and individual stories for every single NPC. The developers aim to leverage the close-knit nature of a secluded village like Stromford to create more realistic and interwoven interactions between NPCs and the player.
Further improvements include enhanced visual fidelity, more nuanced behaviors, and richer facial expressions, all contributing to a more immersive and believable world. The result promises a significantly improved level of NPC interaction and a more engaging overall experience.
