Sony's innovative patent aims to enhance accessibility for deaf gamers by introducing real-time in-game sign language translation. This technology bridges communication gaps between players using different sign languages.
Sony Patents Real-Time Sign Language Translation for Video Games
Leveraging VR and Cloud Gaming Technologies
A recently filed Sony patent details a system for real-time translation of sign languages within video games. The patent, titled "TRANSLATION OF SIGN LANGUAGE IN A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT," proposes a solution enabling communication between, for example, an ASL user and a JSL user.
This system facilitates in-game communication for deaf gamers by instantly translating sign language. On-screen avatars or indicators would dynamically reflect the translated sign language. The process involves a three-step translation: sign language to text, text translation between languages, and finally, text to the target sign language.
"The present disclosure describes methods and systems for capturing the sign language of one user and translating it for another user in their native sign language," Sony explains in the patent. "Sign languages vary geographically, necessitating a system capable of capturing, interpreting, and generating appropriate sign language output for different users."
Sony suggests utilizing VR headsets (HMDs) for optimal implementation. "The HMD connects to a user device (PC, game console, etc.) to provide an immersive virtual environment," the patent states.
Further, Sony proposes a networked system, potentially utilizing a cloud gaming architecture. "A game server manages the game's state, synchronizing user devices and enabling interaction within a shared virtual environment," the patent details. "In some implementations, the game server could be part of a cloud gaming system, rendering and streaming video between user devices."
This architecture allows for seamless multiplayer interaction, with the sign language translation handled through the networked system, potentially enhancing the gaming experience for a wider audience.
