Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are buzzing with excitement as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has opened up the floodgates for modders by releasing its internal editor, the Integration Studio, for public use. This monumental move has sparked hopes that Space Marine 2 could enjoy a longevity akin to that of *Skyrim*, fueled by a vibrant modding community. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko shared this exciting development on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, calling it "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community."
The Integration Studio, previously used solely by the developers for gameplay development, now empowers modders to delve into various aspects of the game. From crafting new level scenarios and game modes to fine-tuning AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, and user interface elements, the possibilities are vast. Grigorenko emphasized the developer's commitment to the modding scene, stating, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling."
To kickstart the modding frenzy, Grigorenko shared a playful concept art of a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, hinting at the creative potential now at modders' fingertips. This humorous idea involves Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines, in a fishing adventure, showcasing the light-hearted side of what could be created.
I spoke with Tom, known as *Warhammer Workshop*, the modder behind the acclaimed *Astartes Overhaul* mod for Space Marine 2. Fresh off releasing a mod that allows for 12-player co-op, Tom now has access to all the scripting tools that govern mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. He envisions possibilities like a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and progressively face tougher enemies, with chances to earn weapons and other resources upon defeating foes. "Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter," Tom suggested.
While creating a new cinematic campaign is within reach, Tom noted that crafting cutscenes remains challenging without access to animation tools. However, he's actively working on introducing new factions such as the Tau and Necrons, utilizing available character rigs. Meanwhile, the community is eager to take on Grigorenko's challenge of creating the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game.
The response from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the game's success and its status as one of the top-selling Warhammer video games, it initially offered only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos (including Chaos Marines and Tzeentch Daemons), and the Tyrannids. With the modding tools now available, fans can expand the faction roster themselves, especially after the campaign hinted at the Necrons' potential inclusion.
As Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment announce the development of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*, some fans worry about the future of Space Marine 2's DLC. However, assurances have been made that Space Marine 2 will not be abandoned. With the modding community now empowered, the game is set to thrive for years to come.
