Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from Mass Effect 3's soundtrack. Wall, celebrated for his work on the first two games' iconic 80s-inspired scores, particularly Mass Effect 2's acclaimed "Suicide Mission," reveals a creative rift with then-development chief Casey Hudson.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wall stated, "Casey wasn't particularly happy with me at the end," attributing his non-involvement in Mass Effect 3 to this professional disagreement. Despite the fallout, Wall expresses pride in his contributions, noting the Bafta nomination and the soundtrack's overall success. While The Guardian hinted at "creative tension," Wall remained tight-lipped, simply stating that such disagreements are an occasional, albeit unfortunate, aspect of the industry.
Wall offered more detail regarding the intense challenges of completing Mass Effect 2, specifically the "Suicide Mission" sequence. He described the experience as "the biggest mind-f***ing thing I've ever done," highlighting the lack of support due to BioWare's frantic race to finish the game. Despite the difficulties, he's immensely proud of the final result, calling it one of the best game-ending sequences ever created.
Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, most recently Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently focused on the next Mass Effect installment after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has yet to reveal the composer for the upcoming title.
