Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging, But Other Asynchronous Features Remain

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.

The asynchronous messaging system, a staple of FromSoftware titles, has fostered a unique player community and enriched the experience. However, Ishizaki explained to IGN Japan that the system's inclusion would clash with Nightreign's intended streamlined and intense gameplay.

While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features will return and be enhanced. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will allow players to not only witness but also loot the ghosts of fallen opponents. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of creating a "compressed RPG" experience—one packed with variety and minimal downtime—as explained by Ishizaki.

This "compressed" approach also explains Nightreign's three-day structure. The game aims for a consistently intense, multiplayer experience, differing significantly from the original Elden Ring.

Nightreign, revealed at TGA 2024, is slated for a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
