Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and HoYoverse CEO Liu Wei recently revealed the significant impact of negative player feedback on the Genshin Impact development team. His candid comments shed light on a challenging year for the game and its creators.

Genshin Impact Developers Overwhelmed by Negative Fan Reaction

Team Remains Dedicated to Improvement and Player Feedback

(c) SentientBamboo In a recent Shanghai event, Liu Wei addressed the "anxiety and confusion" within the Genshin Impact team stemming from intense criticism over the past year. The period surrounding Lunar New Year 2024 and subsequent updates proved particularly turbulent, marked by growing player dissatisfaction.

According to a translated recording by SentientBamboo on YouTube, Liu described the effect of the negative feedback: "Over the past year, both the Genshin team and I experienced significant anxiety and confusion. We faced challenging times. The volume and intensity of criticism made the entire team feel useless."

Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and This statement follows a series of controversies surrounding recent updates, including the 4.4 Lantern Rite event. The event's meager rewards (three intertwined fates) sparked widespread disappointment and criticism.

Many players voiced frustration over perceived insufficient updates compared to other HoYoverse titles like Honkai: Star Rail, leading to a surge of negative reviews. Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves also fueled the discontent, with comparisons highlighting differences in gameplay and character movement.

Further fueling the backlash was Genshin's 4.5 Chronicled Banner, whose gacha mechanics drew negative comparisons to traditional Event Banners. Concerns were also raised about the game's overall direction, particularly regarding the portrayal of characters inspired by real-world cultures, with accusations of "whitewashing" and misrepresentation.

Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and While visibly emotional, Wei acknowledged these concerns: "Some felt our team was arrogant and unresponsive. But we're gamers too; we understand player feelings. The sheer volume of feedback overwhelmed us; we needed to calm down and identify genuine player concerns."

Despite the challenges, Liu expressed optimism for the future, reiterating the team's commitment to improvement and community engagement. "We can't meet every expectation, but the past year's challenges have also fostered courage and trust. Moving forward, let's focus on creating the best possible experience."
