Palworld's Unexpected Path: Indie Spirit Over AAA Ambition
Pocketpair, the studio behind the wildly successful Palworld, has amassed significant profits, potentially enough to create a game exceeding AAA standards. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has reiterated the company's commitment to its indie roots.
Despite Palworld's tens of billions of yen in revenue (approximately tens of millions of USD), Mizobe believes Pocketpair lacks the structure to manage a project of that scale. He explained in a GameSpark interview that Palworld's development was funded by previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon, and that scaling up dramatically wouldn't align with the company's current organizational maturity.
"A game built on these profits would surpass AAA scale, but our organizational structure isn't ready for that," Mizobe stated. He prefers focusing on "interesting indie games" rather than large-budget projects.
Mizobe highlighted the challenges of AAA game development, citing the difficulty of creating a hit title with a large team. In contrast, the thriving indie game scene, with its improved engines and industry conditions, allows for global success without massive operations. Pocketpair attributes its growth to the indie community and aims to give back.
Expanding the Palworld Universe
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair won't be expanding its team or upgrading its facilities. Instead, the focus is on expanding the Palworld IP through various mediums.
Palworld, currently in early access, continues to receive positive feedback and substantial updates. Recent additions include a PvP arena and a new island in the Sakurajima update. Furthermore, a partnership with Sony has led to the creation of Palworld Entertainment, managing global licensing and merchandising.
