Argentine director Andy Muschietti (It, The Flash) has offered a much-needed update on the Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Announced by Sony Pictures over a decade ago in 2009, the project has seen its share of delays. Initially slated to be directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle), scheduling conflicts led to Muschietti taking the helm.
Beyond Shadow of the Colossus, Sony recently unveiled a wave of video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film (despite the existing Starship Troopers arguably covering similar ground), a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.
Speaking on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso program, Muschietti confirmed that the Shadow of the Colossus film is "absolutely not abandoned." He acknowledged the long development time, explaining that factors beyond creative ambition, such as the IP's immense popularity, impact the process. Specifically, he mentioned ongoing discussions regarding the film's budget and the selection of a preferred script from among several versions.
Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director
While other games, such as Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2 (which shows the influence of Shadow of the Colossus), have attempted to capture the original's atmosphere and colossal enemies, Sony's action-adventure remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, while admitting he's not a "big gamer," calls the game a "masterpiece" and confirms having played it multiple times.
The game's brilliance is a testament to creator Fumito Ueda, who has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. Their new, currently untitled sci-fi game, announced at The Game Awards 2024, hints at a similar sense of isolated grandeur found in the 2005 original. Despite high-definition remakes culminating in the 2018 PlayStation 4 release, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues, with this live-action adaptation aiming to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
