Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has outlined an ambitious plan to build a next-generation metaverse, leveraging Unreal Engine 6 and fostering interoperability between major gaming platforms. This vision includes integrating the assets and marketplaces of popular games built on Unreal Engine, such as Fortnite and potentially Roblox and others.
A Unified Metaverse Ecosystem
Sweeney, in an interview with The Verge, emphasized the creation of an interoperable metaverse with a shared economy. He highlighted Epic's strong financial position, stating that the company is well-resourced to execute this long-term strategy. A key component is the development of Unreal Engine 6, envisioned as a powerful yet user-friendly engine incorporating features from the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. This integration aims to simplify development while retaining the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine.
