New Sony Patent Could Use AI and a Camera Pointed at Your Fingers to Work Out What Button You’ll Press Next

Sony's innovative approach to reducing latency in future gaming hardware is detailed in a newly filed patent. The patent, focusing on "timed release of user commands," leverages AI and additional sensors to predict player inputs, thereby minimizing lag.

Sony's existing PlayStation 5 Pro upscaler, PSSR, while capable of 4K upscaling, highlights the latency challenges introduced by frame generation technologies. Competitors AMD and Nvidia have addressed this with Radeon Anti-Lag and Nvidia Reflex, respectively, and Sony's patent suggests a similar solution.

As reported by Tech4gamers, patent WO2025010132 employs a machine-learning AI model to anticipate player inputs. This predictive model is complemented by an external sensor, potentially a camera observing the controller, to further refine input prediction. The patent explicitly mentions using "camera input as an input to a machine learning (ML) model." Alternatively, the sensor could be integrated into the controller itself, possibly utilizing advanced analog button technology.

While the patent's specifics may not directly translate into PlayStation 6 implementation, it underscores Sony's commitment to mitigating latency issues arising from advanced rendering techniques like FSR 3 and DLSS 3. The technology's benefits would be particularly noticeable in fast-paced games demanding both high frame rates and minimal latency, such as twitch shooters. However, the ultimate application of this patent in future hardware remains uncertain.
